La infraestructura se plantea, therefore, as a tool to support police work and not as an isolated image capture element. Its deployment responds to a municipal architecture of greater scope, in which video surveillance is progressively incorporated into different spaces of the city and its districts.

Of 549 a 1.879 cameras

Once the project is completed, Murcia will have 1.879 cameras if you add the 549 devices that are already part of the municipal network at 1.330 new planned units. The scale leap turns the action into one of the main video surveillance expansion operations undertaken by the City Council.

Los 267 selected points will cover different types of public spaces. The declared objective of the City Council is for the deployment to reach all neighborhoods and districts, avoiding concentrating the infrastructure exclusively in the urban center.

The project began to take shape during the first half of 2026. In May, the City Council presented the plan and subsequently started technical visits to the different sites. In the case of El Carmen, these inspections were carried out with the participation of municipal officials and Local Police commanders to determine the installation points.

The expansion of the camera network is added to other technological initiatives developed this year by the Murcia City Council in terms of security.

In March, the City Council announced the incorporation of 24 personal recording devices for the Local Police, intended to document certain interventions in public spaces within legally authorized cases and to reinforce both transparency and legal protection for agents and citizens.

To this infrastructure is added a different project, although related to the use of image capture technologies, to implement an intelligent system of capacity control. The action includes 25 video sensors and devices in the eight market squares of Murcia, connected to the Smart City Platform of the City Council. Its purpose is to obtain real-time information on the occupancy of certain spaces to improve planning and security management.

Data protection and signage of the spaces

The growth of an infrastructure of this size also places data and image management at the center of the project. The City Council assures that the system incorporates the necessary measures and guarantees to ensure the processing and protection of personal data in accordance with applicable regulations. The locations where cameras have already been installed will also be properly marked, with information about the presence and purpose of the devices, according to the City Council.

For a network that will ultimately integrate nearly 1.900 municipal cameras, the management of the lifecycle of the images, access controls, the security of communications and the definition of consultation and conservation procedures will be elements as relevant as the actual performance of the acquisition equipment.
