Renfe renews the video surveillance systems of the Cercanías stations

Bajo el proyecto RS3, Renfe is digitizing the security infrastructure of the stations with anti-intrusion solutions, access control, CCTV cameras and recorders, in addition to including network management systems and centralization of the main elements that make up the new intelligent video surveillance equipment.

Renfe has completed the first phase of the RS3 project (Renfe Smart Security Station) with the installation of equipment at smart video surveillance in 415 commuter train stations throughout Spain. This first stage of the project has involved 25,8 millions of euros of investment and is part of the EU Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan NextGenerationEU.

For this year, Renfe plans to carry out a second phase of the RS3 project, which will begin next March, para poner en funcionamiento instalaciones de seguridad avanzada en 182 estaciones más.

El objetivo es que este proyecto finalice a mediados de 2026, hasta completar la instalación de videovigilancia inteligente en 597 estaciones de los 12 núcleos de Cercanías y Rodalies existentes en todo el territorio nacional. La inversión prevista para esta segunda fase es de 6,5 million euros, financiados también con fondos NextGenerationUE.

Digitalización de los sistemas de seguridad

Uno de los objetivos del proyecto RS3 es la digitalización de los sistemas de seguridad de las estaciones con solcuiones anti-intrusión y of access control, cameras and engravers de CCTV, así como la instalación de sistemas de gestión de red y centralización de los principales elementos que componen la infraestructura de seguridad de las estaciones.

analysis with artificial intelligence

the system collects and processes thousands of data anonymously and automatically through the CCTV system cameras that connect to the analytics servers from each station, where they are processed and analyzed with artificial intelligence algorithms. Subsequently, the processed images are deleted from the system within milliseconds.

In this sense, the digitization of security systems and the implementation of intelligent video analytics solutions are going to turn railway stations into spaces of high predictive security. The goal is to improve safety and customer experience, siempre desde el cumplimiento estricto de la normativa de protección de datos.

Para implementar estas soluciones, Renfe cuenta con empresas punteras en tecnologías de analítica e inteligencia de imágenes, e Infinity Neural e Imotion Analytics (esta última es una de las ‘startups’ acelerada con nuestro programa de innovación TrenLab).

Elementos de seguridad digitalizados

Cuando finalice la segunda fase del proyecto se habrán digitalizado los sistemas de seguridad de 597 estaciones de Cercanías con la instalación de más de 9.000 IP cameras, more than 600 grabadores de CCTV y otros tantos servidores de analítica de vídeo, among other elements. In this sense, se van a analizar los flujos de vídeo de más de 6.000 cámaras en más de 600 servers, que permitirán obtener información de las estaciones en un cuadro de mando único.

Tener acceso a información en directo sobre la evolución del servicio de Cercanías es clave para mejorar la experiencia del pasajero, que prima la certidumbre y fiabilidad a la hora de elegir un medio de transporte. In this sense, la frecuencia y la puntualidad son los principales atributos que debe cumplir el transporte colectivo para conseguir atraer viajeros del coche privado, uno de los objetivos del Plan de Recuperación, Transformation and Resilience (PRTR).
