Telefónica designs a solution for managing autonomous drone fleets for security

The solution of Telefónica Security Engineering (TIS), designed together with its technology partner Unmanned Life, will be presented in a session at the Ágora of Telefónica during the celebration of Mobile World Congress 2022 in Barcelona.

Telefónica Security Engineering (TIS), in the company of Telefónica Group, together with Unmanned Life, have developed an innovative management solution for autonomous drone fleets from a single centralized platform to carry out security tasks, surveillance, event verification and maintenance of critical infrastructures.

This development will be presented at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2022, which will be held in Barcelona 28 from February to 3 March, and will star in the session that will take place in the Ágora of the Telefónica stand, the next 1 March, titled The future is here, Telefónica’s Headquarter Drone Protection, and in which it will be possible to see the operation of the solution live.

Specifically, this solution allows programming an autonomous flight zone in which multiple aircraft are capable of identifying events through analytics, con artificial intelligence (IA), integrated into the platform, such as the detection of unauthorized persons in that location.

Additionally, it also sends the images in real time thanks to 5G connectivity for their corresponding analysis. All this complying with the legal aeronautical requirements for drone flights and established privacy regulations.

Besides, it offers the ability to integrate the event verification function so that drones go to inspect the site in case of any alarm and, besides, the ability to detect, identify and neutralize drones. Thanks to it, esta la solución puede detectar aeronaves a una distancia de hasta 10 Km. y neutralizarlas cuando se identifiquen como amenaza a una distancia aproximada de 1,5 Km.

La solución de Telefónica Ingeniería de Seguridad está diseñada especialmente para las empresas que carezcan de personal especializado en estas funciones de vigilancia y seguridad o para aquellas que quieran destinar a sus equipos humanos al desempeño de otras labores de mayor valor añadido.

Su implementación genera importantes eficiencias de tiempo y de hasta el 35% en costes operativos, según los datos aportados por la compañía, ya que los drones no necesitan pilotaje.

La plataforma de Unmanned Life, agnóstica al hardware, puede trabajar con cualquier tipo de dron. Telefónica Security Engineering carries out technological consultancy for the customization of the drones that best meet the clients' needs, taking into account sensing, autonomy, operation, environment, payloads and any parameter that may be involved in the operation.

To demonstrate their benefits and capabilities, a deployment of the solution has been carried out at the headquarters of Telefónica District in Madrid, a highly complex environment from a regulatory point of view due to its proximity to airports and helipads.

For this reason, the drones used have a dimension of 1,20 meters and are equipped with advanced safety systems so that, if any unforeseen event arises, como la pérdida de conectividad o inhibición de las comunicaciones, puedan aterrizar de forma controlada.

In addition, los drones cuentan con una autonomía de 45 minutos y, transcurrido este tiempo, las aeronaves se dirigen de forma automática a una estación de carga cercana para alimentarse en unos 30 minutes.

Esta solución de seguridad es pionera a nivel nacional, siendo Distrito Telefónica la primera sede corporativa en desplegarla, tras obtener todas las autorizaciones pertinentes de la Agencia Estatal de Seguridad Aérea (Aesa) para llevarla a cabo con todas las garantías.
