The surface surveillance system Indra, InNOVAGround A-SMGCS, has begun its operation in the Heathrow Airport to ensure safety in the operations of one of the world's most important and most trafficked airports in Europe, according to Airports Council International (Aci), which records on average more than 1.300 flights a day on its two runways.

Indra has merged the control tower's data presentation with the A-SMGCS into a single, integrated system, incorporating enhanced tracking and presentation tools and expandability with new SESAR features such as ground safety nets Advanced, which has reduced the number of false alerts and improved operational efficiency and security.

New system processing features have improved coverage on tracks above 95%, while, at the same time, the number of false alerts that controllers receive have decreased.

As Tim Bullock has pointed out, director of the supply chain Nats (air navigation service provider at numerous UK airports), "I am delighted that Indra has once again made a successful new installment, demonstrating the extent of our strategic collaboration is able to benefit NATS and its customers".

For its part, Elin Blakstad, director of Torre de Indra, added that "this airport operates above the 98% of its ability, which is really awesome. We are proud that NATS has relied on us on a recurring basis to supply you with one of the systems that allow you to achieve something like this, which drives our capacity for innovation".
