Designed for surveillance applications, the new S300 and S300 Pro mechanical hard drives that Toshiba Electronics Europe just filed, available with 2 TB and 4 Tb,integrate also integrate Conventional Magnetic Recording technology (Cmr).

To meet the demand for small- and medium-scale video surveillance systems, these units are optimized for use in cost-constrained applications and responding to the requirements of surveillance systems with up to 32 HD camera sequences.

Specifically,, these units provide 5.400 rotations per minute (Rpm) and a buffer size of 128 Mb, and include technology for set-top boxes, digital video recorders (Dvr) and network video (Nvr).

Powered by SMR, the new S300 series uses overlapping tracks for higher data density, leaving only the magnetic surface needed for proper reading. This contrasts with CRM technology, where each track is separated by a small distance. The result is greater capacity for the same magnetic area, contributing to improving total cost of ownership (Tco).

Implementing an appropriate cache architecture compensates for the potential disadvantages of random rewriting overlapping tracks, making the S300 series suitable for small- and medium-scale surveillance applications.

For larger surveillance systems that require up to 64 HD camera sequences, video analysis, facial tracking and editing features, the S300 Pro series, with CMR technology, offers capabilities of up to 10 TB and a buffer size of up to 256 Mb, suitable for digital surveillance video recorders (SDVR), video recorders from surveillance networks (SNVR) and sdVR hybrids.

Lorenzo Martinez-Palomo, CEO of Toshiba Electronics Europe's storage products business marketing area, "taking into account the continued growth of surveillance systems around the world, S300 and S300 Pro hard drives are a bespoke surveillance storage solution; provide stable operation 24×7 and are optimized for the needs of major surveillance DVRs and NVRs that make use of eight or more bays".

The Toshiba S300 Pro series and the new 4TB S300 model are now available on the market, while the 2TB S300 will be marketed at the end of this year.
