Together with WWF and OPF, it is collaborating in the conservation of this mammal, known as the 'smiling angel', which lives in China's longest river. For its protection and monitoring, underwater cameras and unmanned aerial vehicles have been installed in the nature reserve.

Hikvision helps in the protection of the porpoise

Hikvision has joined forces with non-profit organizations WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) and OPF (One Planet Fund) to participate in the conservation project of the finless porpoise, the only aquatic mammal remaining in China's longest river, the Yangtze, in China's central Hubei province.

Generally, when talking about endangered species in China, The usual thing is to think of the panda bear. However, the finless porpoise, known as 'the smiling angel' for its permanent and iconic smile, is even closer to extinction.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed this species “as critically endangered”, with only 1.000 specimens in the wild in 2017. Fortunately, currently there are more and more people aware who work together to conserve the Yangtze River ecosystem, the home of the 'smiling angel'.

Hikvision contributes to this project by incorporating underwater cameras and unmanned aerial vehicles in the nature reserve, to monitor, efficiently,, the habits of the porpoises in the Yangtze River, as well as the hydrobiological environment. Besides, thanks to these devices it will be possible to collect the necessary data for research on the living habits of these animals in natural waters and thus improve their protection.

According to Lei Gang, director of the WWF Wuhan region, the number of finless porpoises in this area has increased from 20 ejemplares, up to nearly a hundred. However, it is still necessary for governments, companies, NGOs and other social organizations to join efforts to address serious challenges and prevent this species from going extinct.

As a technology partner, Hikvision is working closely with the rest of the organizations involved in the project, para la gestión eficaz de vigilancia del hábitat y protección de las marsopas. “In recent years, Hikvision ha estado altamente comprometida con diversas iniciativas para fomentar el desarrollo sostenible, like in this case, donde estamos aunando esfuerzos para proteger a la marsopa y la biodiversidad local, a través de tecnologías innovadoras”, dijo Fu Hao, Director del Centro de Negocios Hikvision Hubei en China.
