The Swedish car manufacturer Volvo Car Corporation has incorporated in the new generation of its V40 model a series of innovative safety and driver assistance features, including a pioneering pedestrian detection function with full automatic braking, that works up to speeds of 35 km/h if the driver does not react.

Volvo, like the rest of the automotive brands, seeks to diversify. That is why has launched the new Volvo V40, a compact hatchback designed to help the driver stay alert and knowledgeable in order to avoid collisions and dangerous situations. The Swedish firm's engineers have implemented a machine vision system and a radar system in these new cars to help reduce accidents.. The system detects if the pedestrian walks on the road in front of the car and if the driver does not react in time, the car can alert you and automatically apply the brakes.

The system consists of a radar integrated into the front grille of the car, a camera located in the central mirror and a control unit. The task of radar is to detect the pedestrian or vehicle in front of the car and determine the distance, and the vision camera determines the type of object.

Thanks to the wide field of view of the system, pedestrians who are about to step on a lane can be detected in advance. The system has been programmed to perform a pedestrian movement pattern and calculate if it will cross in the path of the car. In case of emergency, the driver first receives an audible alert combined with a light signal on the front moon, if the driver does not react to the signal and the collision is imminent, brakes are automatically actuated.

The system can avoid collisions with pedestrians at a speed of up to 35km/h if the driver does not react in time. At higher speeds, the system can reduce the speed as much as possible, trying to avoid the crash.
