Hanwha Techwin helps improve security on the Pedemontana Veneta highway
The artificial intelligence video technology of Hanwha Techwin y Sprinx provides operators of this Italian highway with information on traffic volume and speed to improve safety.
The need for a highway to connect the Italian cities of Vicenza and Treviso arose in the decade of 1970 with urbanization in the area, which gained more strength in the decade of 90 with the opening of the European Union to the East and the consequent increase in traffic throughout the region.
It was in November of 2011 when the first stone was laid in Romano d’Ezzelino of what is currently the toll highway Pedemontana Veneta (SPV), and it has been a few months ago when the 162 kilómetros que unen Vicenza y Treviso, que se interconectarán con tres autovías nacionales y darán una mayor movilidad a los 4,9 millones de habitantes y las 500.000 empresas radicadas en esa región.
The solution to meet these requirements has been the deployment of a video surveillance system with artificial intelligence by Hanwha Techwin, in collaboration with its technology partner Sprinx.
For this project, the Italian distributor Sirius – Compass and the system integrators SIS Scpa y Pagano SpA worked together to install six hundred cámaras Wisenet high-resolution Hanwha Techwin cameras with ICR technology (day and night), and wide dynamic range to provide high resolution and high-quality images, regardless of light levels, along the SPV route.
The installation also includes PTZ dome cameras with zoom of 32 magnifications from this manufacturer, que se controlan mediante su sistema de gestión de vídeo Wisenet Wave.
The system can reliably detect events that could cause traffic congestion or even serious accidents.
This solution can also detect and alert operators when there is smoke in any of the many highway tunnels, which could indicate a traffic incident or a fire.
Using Hanwha Techwin cameras as traffic sensors, Sprinx's software solution also detects traffic jams and objects on the highway, such as cargo spilled by a vehicle, which poses a danger to approaching vehicles. Safety is also ensured by the system's ability to alert operators about any pedestrian who has strayed onto the highway.
The use of the artificial intelligence in the system offers additional benefits for the SPV beyond safety. With Sprinx traffic analysis, the system installed along the highway tracks vehicles moving in any of the fields of view of the Wisenet cameras and can collect data from both lanes simultaneously in both directions.
The resulting traffic data can be recorded and stored, offering a complete source of information on how and when the highway is used and what types of vehicles travel on it.
The system allows operators to count vehicles, measure traffic density and determine average speed along the route. This information is integrated into the Wisenet Wave video management system and delivered through an intuitive web user interface.
'Hanwha Techwin and Sprinx have made the Pedemontana Veneta highway safer for users and help maintain smooth traffic,' explains Gerando Capezzuto, of SIS Scpa-.
