Drones and muon tomography will strengthen security at the Port of Santander

The projects 'Airdrone Port Security Systems'’ and 'Muon Cargo', both beneficiaries of the aids granted by the Plan to Promote Entrepreneurship for Innovation in the Port Sector Ports 4.0 and of which the APS is a facilitating agent, will allow the modernization of safety in the Port of Santander.

For the president of the Port Authority of Santander (APS), César Díaz, proposals like these “show the talent and innovative capacity of Cantabrian companies with a technological base and, from this administration, we will always be willing to support initiatives that help ports implement technologies to automate their processes and thus be much more efficient”.

In fact, Díaz has recalled that “we have recently signed with Noatum Santander Multipurpose Terminal (Noatum TPS) y la compañía de raíz cántabra Panssari, también beneficiaria de Puertos 4.0, un acuerdo de colaboración para desarrollar un programa piloto de su proyecto de seguridad integral”.

“Por nuestro tamaño, diversidad de mercancías y amplia terminalización aspiramos a convertirnos en un puerto laboratorio en el que startups puedan desarrollar sus ideas para, posteriormente, extrapolarlas a otros puertos”, has explained.

En cuanto a la finalidad del proyecto Airdrone Port Security Systems es llevar a cabo el desarrollo e implantación de un sistema basado en el uso de RPAs, aeronaves civiles no tripuladas pilotadas por control remoto, conocidas coloquialmente como drones, con el objetivo de mejorar la seguridad en los puertos marítimos, complementing the functions of the ground team and enhancing their monitoring and continuous surveillance capabilities through modern Artificial Intelligence tools.

This is an initiative, beneficiary of the Ports program 4.0, which has been jointly developed by the company Ingeniería Tecnológica y Digital del Norte, S.L. (INTEDIG) and the Fundación Centro Tecnológico de Componentes (CTC).

Project demonstrations have already been carried out at the port of Santander, validating its effectiveness.

Muon Cargo

The company Muon Tomography Systems will be responsible for the project 'Muon Cargo'. Non-invasive inspection of goods in maritime transport using muon tomography', whose objective is to provide cargo traffic control a rapid inspection device, harmless and non-invasive for containers for the detection of threats, of illegal goods traffic and people hidden inside them, through the use of muon tomography. A technology that takes advantage of the natural radiation of muons (subatomic particles) to inspect large objects, such as containers, without opening them.

Muon Tomography Systems has demonstrated the project results at the company's facilities, located in Santander. The project, also a beneficiary of the Ports program 4.0, has had the collaboration of the Port Authority of Santander as a facilitating agent.

Ports 4.0

Ports 4.0 is an initiative of the twenty-eight Port Authorities and State Ports, que se engloba en el Plan de Innovación para el Transporte y las Infraestructuras del Ministerio de Transportes y Movilidad Sostenible, y constituye el proyecto disruptivo más importante para la adaptación del sector logístico-portuario español a la economía 4.0.

El objetivo del Plan de Impulso al Emprendimiento para la Innovación en el Sector Portuario Puertos 4.0 es atraer, apoyar y facilitar la aplicación del talento y el emprendimiento para la innovación al sector logístico-portuario español público y privado, articulado a través de un plan de ayudas públicas.

Se busca promover la creación o consolidación de un tejido de empresas emergentes, startups, spin-off o nuevas líneas de negocio de empresas existentes que desarrollen e implanten productos, servicios y procesos innovadores para el sector logístico-portuario español, con orientación al mercado.

Además de impulsar proyectos de este tipo, desde la APS, conscientes de la importancia de la innovación y la digitalización para afrontar los nuevos retos y ganar en competitividad, “estamos trabajando junto a la comunidad portuaria en un ambicioso Plan de Innovación y de Transformación Digital para facilitar el intercambio de información, mejorar el servicio prestado e incrementar el nivel de eficiencia del Puerto”, ha asegurado el máximo representante del enclave portuario.
