In order to combat crime and provide better care to users, the international airports of La Isabela and Las Americas, located in Santo Domingo, decided to optimize their video surveillance system. Project commissioned by integrator Metrotec using Vivotek solutions and which will continue to expand to the rest of the island's airports.

Vivotek Santo Domingo Airport

The capital of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo, it is the largest city in the Caribbean region and has some of the busiest domestic and international airports in the area such as Las Americas International Airport (Aila) and La Isabela's (Iata).

Las Americas is one of santo Domingo's busiest airports, receiving a variety of aircraft, like Boeing and Airbus, and drives around 3,1 millions of passengers a year. La Isabela International Airport, for his part, it's a relatively recent airport, which opened in February 2006 to replace the old Herrera. La Isabela is the main hub of Dominican airlines operating to and from other Caribbean islands.

In March 2014, Metrotec, an integrative partner of local systems Vivotek, was responsible for updating surveillance systems at the two airports. The goal was to combat crime and drug trafficking, prevent loss of luggage, improving passenger and cargo monitoring and control at the airport.

To maximize safety, Metrotec chose Vivotek IP8362's bullet-type network camera and SD8362E high-speed dome network camera. AILA was equipped with 100 IP8362 and 42 SD8362E models, while La Isabela International Airport was equipped with 25 IP8362 systems and five SD8362E cameras.

Optimization of management and operation

The IP8362 is a state-of-the-art full HD bullet network camera designed for various indoor and outdoor applications. Features improved WDR, allowing surveillance in high-contrast lighting conditions, such as near entrances or around airport service points and aircraft parking areas, where bright and dark areas lose detail.

The camera also offers extra-smooth video quality with up to 30 fps at 1080p Full HD. In addition, because international airports operate 24 Hours, The IP8362 comes with a removable IR cut filter and built-in IR illuminators that facilitated day and night applications. Other advanced features include sabotage detection, 802.3af PoE and a MicroSD/SDHC card slot for onboard storage.

The SD8362E, a professional high-speed dome network camera, offers image quality of 2 MP or 1080p resolution. Powered by WDR Pro, THE SD8362E also works under difficult lighting conditions. With a sophisticated pan/tilt mechanism, the camera offers fast and precise movement with continuous horizontal movement of 360 degrees and inclination of 90 Degrees.

Airport security personnel can control the position of the lens through a mouse or joystick to track suspicious objects and set up 128 predefined positions to patrol.

The cover, IP-66 rating, protects the camera from rain and dust within a wide range of temperatures (-40C&C and 55oC), which makes it a particularly suitable camera for controlling large indoor and outdoor spaces, what airports are like. In addition to most of the functions of the IP8362, the SD8362E is also equipped with audio detection, that detects fluctuations in the volume of the surrounding area, thus ensuring an additional intruder detection filter.

Cesac C4 Central Command Center

In this project Metrotec implemented the video management system of Genetec and integrated videos from both airports into a Cesac C4 Central Command Center where all images and audio are received.

A large video wall is installed to deploy alarm events to 15 security operators who have a detailed view to take immediate action, while at the same time all data is stored in a large data center with non-stop operations 24×7. The software combines the network security surveillance systems installed at each airport within a single intuitive interface, improving operational efficiency and simplifying video management.

This project is now expanding to others 13 airports on the island with the same structure.

Risk reduction

Since the installation of surveillance cameras and the security system at both airports in March 2014, airport management and Metrotec have continued to provide positive feedback, praising the robustness of the hardware, the seamless integration of the software, and the efficiency received in relation to the costs, ensuring this way, that airport security is sufficient to address the growing security risks today and in the future.
